Minnesota Health Insurance Savings & HSA

Have you ever wondered if you are overpaying for your Minnesota Health Insurance?
Don’t wait for the insurance company to tell you!
Your health insurance isn’t getting any cheaper by itself, and you may not even know what your dollar is paying for each month. We keep things simple when explaining to our clients how their health plan works, and how to use it to its maximum benefit for the lowest cost.

"At a time when health care costs are rising rapidly and individuals, families and employers are struggling to find lower-cost alternatives, HSAs are a terrific option that I think every American ought to consider."

Tip #1: How to Make Your Insurance Less Expensive
Save money now by raising your deductible and you might still decrease your out of pocket risk!
If you want significant premium savings, the best way to accomplish this is by taking more risk away from the insurance company. After all, that is what they are charging you for right now. When you have a low deductible and co-pays the insurance companies figure in this additional risk and you naturally get higher monthly premiums. If you want to borrow someone else’s money to pay for your health care, you are going to pay extra for it. When have you ever been able to spend someone else’s money and NOT pay more for it? (See mortgages, rental, credit cards, loans, etc. for details).
If you have a low deductible or co-pay plan right now, you are probably paying too much. If you only pay $20 at the doctor's office, who pays for the rest of the bill? Your insurance company does.
Remember, good insurance companies know how to make money, not lose it. So while you may think you are protected by low deductibles and co-pays, look at your monthly premiums. Now who do you think is paying the bill?
If you have a low deductible or co-pays, you are going to pay a higher premium regardless of whether you even use it or not.
And believe it or not, even if you did have a lot of medical expenses, a high deductible plan will often still save you money.
Look at your current health insurance carrier’s rates and notice the difference between the costs of their high deductible and low deductible plans. Add the premium savings of a higher deductible over the course of a year and see how quickly it can add up to a lot of money that stays in your pocket.

"I cover a family of four with my new HSA plan. I like the fact that with a low premium/high deductible plan, we are not prepaying for services we do not intend to use. We live a healthy lifestyle and are happy to be more in control of our health spending. We also know that we are covered for catastrophic, unforeseen needs. With the savings portion, we maximize our tax deductions and plan to use the account as supplemental retirement income."

"Our new plan lowered our premium cost by two thirds, encourages tax-deductible saving, and we aren't faced with the use it or lose it proposition of the old flexible spending account. And, our carrier negotiates, on our behalf, the final cost of medical services such that even if we hit the maximum annual deductible, we would still spend less than our former HMO style plan."

Tip #2: How To Have Better Benefits!

Use a Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for your smaller medical costs as you go and save money on taxes

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) have created a demand for a larger variety of high deductible health plans, and since January of 2004, the consumer’s options have gotten much better.
If you are not familiar with Health Savings Accounts (HSA), the link at the bottom of this section offers great information about them.
A high-deductible health plan will provide you with instant premium savings. This major medical coverage will also protect your family from large unforeseen medical expenses. The whole purpose of insurance is to protect against catastrophic loss. Handle your day-to-day expenses on a tax-free basis with a Health Savings Account, and save the money you don’t spend, tax-deferred.
Spend what you need to; keep the rest in your pocket. Kind of makes sense, doesn’t it?
With a Health Savings Account you can have the freedom to choose when and how your health care dollars get spent. You have control. You keep the money you don’t spend.
You will always be protected from catastrophic medical costs by your health insurance, the HSA will provide you with the means to cover the smaller expenses that may occur. Or it will simply keep money in your pocket that you otherwise were going to pay to the insurance company, never to be seen again (see your high monthly premium for more details).

"I recently quit my job to pursue other opportunities. Upon doing so, I was confronted with the exorbitant cost of electing COBRA health insurance coverage from my former employer. While shopping for a less expensive option for our health coverage, Minnesota Health Coverage helped me and my family find affordable health insurance coverage that fit our situation perfectly. They were sensitive to our needs, and responsive to our questions and concerns. We are very happy with our choice and the service we received."

Tip #3: Getting The Best Health Care For Your Situation

Approach your health care as a consumer, and a shopper

With health care, just like any other expense that we have, there are good deals and bad deals. Nobody wants to get a bad deal, but you will get one if you don’t understand what you’re paying for.
Decisions are made better when people are spending their own money. If you want more control of your health insurance costs, treat your health care as you would any other expense that you have, as a consumer. Often there are big discrepancies with medical costs depending on where you go and how the bills are getting paid. Ask your health care provider upfront what their costs are.
Most people never pay any attention to how much health care costs are when they are being paid for by the insurance company. A doctor might charge an insurance company more for a service than they would charge a person paying with cash. Often, doctors are willing to give discounts to people who provide upfront payment. It is becoming more common that health care costs can be negotiated directly with the consumer, so ask what the costs are before you go.
If you engage your health care as a consumer, you will find that there are many ways to save on health care expenses.
Being aware of the cost of health care, and actually choosing where your dollars are spent, gives you more control and can keep a lot of money in your pocket.
