Spring 2011 Health Insurance Update

Posted February 21st, 2011 @ 10:02pm

The passage of the health care reform bill last March has created a lot of turmoil in the marketplace. There was a lot of disruption and confusion in the last year as agents, insurance carriers, and the general public tried to figure out what it all means to them. There are many questions which still aren’t answered, like “will any of this stuff actually lower costs?” What I know right now is that the process of shopping for and obtaining individual, family, and small business health insurance is still the same process we have been used to in the past. We still have to apply with health history, and a person can still be denied or approved coverage based on their health. There is a guaranteed-issue (no denials for health issues) marketplace planned for 2014, called an exchange. Until 2014, we still have the same health insurance marketplace that we have been used to in the past, with health history applications as part of the process. There are some new benefits that have been mandated for individual plans which can be accessed right away, however, the most significant of which is 100% preventive care and unlimited lifetime maximums. New plans that are activated after the March 23, 2010 passage of the health care bill will include the 100% preventive care coverage in the benefits, and also will not have a cap on the lifetime benefits paid out by the plan.

If you are interested in shopping for individual health insurance, or in the new plans being offered by the many insurance carriers in Minnesota please give us a call at 612-870-8099 or visit our website at http://www.mnhealthcoverage.com
